WHERE THERE'S A GOODWILL, THERE'S A WAY

Updated: Nov 8, 2020

Thrift stores are filled with a plethora of stories. They're boundless books, every piece a page, every outfit a chapter. As someone's new purchase is another's past, thrifting create quiet connections and sustainable change. Therefore, it's my opinion that the racks inside Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake are filled endless possibilities.

If you're a dedicated reader, you know I've been working with Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake over the past six months to give you thrift-spiration, highlighting how secondhand is not second best. I've styled looks for the office, girls' night, and work parties - but shopping at Goodwill is more than just shopping for clothes, shoes, accessories, furniture, and/or home goods. Shopping at Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake is to create a better Baltimore through sustainable practices and funds to support sustainable resources, training, and jobs for our community members. Every purchase gives back to the community and breaks a stigma.

Read how Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake ignites positive change in our community in my post Look Good, Do Good.

So, for my most recent project with Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, I wanted to show you that where there's a Goodwill, there's truly a way to dress for any occasion. If you don't believe me, just visit their massive Catonsville location, 6600 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville, MD 21228. In addition to being a donation center, this location is one of the most organized and elaborate secondhand selections I’ve shopped! Keep scrolling to see my Day to Night finds.

FROM DAY...

Corporate looks are cool and all, but an office look with personality? Nothing more powerful than a well dressed woman. No one needs to know that this sweater and skirt cost me less than $10. A quirky, 60s office look, this colorful shirt-skirt combo seemed like the perfect Spring work look with just the right amount of personality. And the shoes? Brand new, Anne Taylor heels for under $10. Truth be told, my eye was immediately drawn to them because the classic cut of a Venetian loafer - avec tassle - has made a resurgence. To see them done in a pump with metallic snakeskin? Sold.

I threw on a vintage jacket to stay warm and complete the workday look.

TO NIGHT.

...and sometimes work calls for a night time look. Whether you have a gala, networking party, or just want to shine in the hotel lobby, have you considered shopping at Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake for evening wear? Cocktail, black tie, the Catonsville location has them all.

Thrift Lesson: Try every piece on, regardless of size tag or how it looks on the hanger.

Can I just say WOW?? I can believe I found this look at @bmoregoodwill, but I can't believe it fit! As I was trying it on, I felt as though the thrift gods were shining down on me, blessing me with every single sequin. And here's the real kicker. This glorious dress only cost me $14. Can I just say WOW again?? Please tell me you're as geeked about that price as I am! I paired the dress with secondhand heels, et voila, a Parisian vision in the heart of Baltimore City.

Looking to score big on your next Goodwill visit? Here are my PRO-TIPS for shopping at Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake:

  • Take advantage of weekly in-store promotions! Every week, a different "color" tag is on sale. Be sure to check the color when you walk in.

  • Saturday Spectacular sales. On the last Saturday of every month, the entire store is 50% off. Save $$ and look good doing it! Find this month's date HERE.

  • Round up. Cashiers will often ask you if you'd like to round up your receipt to the nearest dollar to help fund job training and professional development programs provided by Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake. I always say yes, donate my change, to further support community members utilizing these valuable resources!
